Take Time to Stop and Taste the Rosé

First produced over 2,000 years ago in the French region of Provence, rosé has recently become the wine of choice among many oenophiles and wine “newbies”. Not to be confused with the sweet white zinfandels of the 1980s, rosé and white zinfandel have the same pink color, but their similarities end there. Another common misconception is that rosé can be made by mixing red wine with white wine. That is not the case. Rosé is actually made when red grapes are lightly crushed and left to soak with their skins for a very short time. While some red wines soak for weeks at a time, rosé is strained from its skins before it becomes too dark, anywhere from a few hours to a few days. The winemaker determines the hue, the skins are removed, the juice is allowed to ferment, and the end result is a delicious rosé.

Rosé is not limited to a specific grape or region. It is created from a combination of grenache, syrah, rolle, cinsault and mourvèdre grapes produced in France, Spain, Italy, and the United States and the type of grape used will affect the flavor. An Italian “rosato” will have cherry and orange zest flavors, while a rosé from Provence will have notes of honeydew melon, lemon, and celery. Other rosés may offer flavors of strawberry, rose petal, and rhubarb. A rosé is usually light and floral but can range from bone dry to lightly sweet. Rosé, does not improve over the years so most bottles will not be dated more than two or three years back.
